Denmark’s Arctic commander rejects Trump’s claims of immediate Russia, China threat to Greenland – POLITICO Skip to main content
By Euronews with AFP Published on 17/01/2026 – 17:02 GMT+1 Thousands of people took to the streets of Denmark’s capital on Saturday to protest at US President Donald Trump’s push to take over Greenland. The protest followed Trump’s warning on Friday that he “may put a tariff” on countries that oppose his plans to take over mineral-rich Greenland, which is an autonomous territory of Denmark. They also coincided with a visit to Copenhagen by a bipartisan delegation from the US Congress that has made clear the opposition of many Americans to the Trump administration’s sabre-rattling. Waving the flags of Denmark and Greenland, the…
Dozens of pet owners took their animals to church on Saturday morning where Catholic priests blessed them on the Day of St Anthony, the patron saint of animals. The ceremony took place on the steps outside the Saint Anthony Church in central Madrid where dogs and cats waited patiently to be sprinkled with holy water. The Catholic tradition is meant to bring the animals health and protection for the coming year. The Municipal Police band played traditional festive music whilst many dogs looked on. Believers are also meant to buy bread rolls for Saint Anthony, in a festival that has…
Hundreds of people protested in Denmark’s capital Copenhagen on Saturday in support of Greenland, amid US President Donald Trump’s insistence that the US should control the self-governing island. Demonstrators waved Greenland flags and carried signs reading “American here: No means No,” “Unite for freedom,” “Make America smart again,” and “Hands off,” some featuring Danish and Greenland flags. It comes as a bipartisan US congressional delegation sought to reassure Denmark and Greenland of their support following Trump’s threat to punish countries with tariffs if they don’t back the US taking over the strategic Arctic island.
Dubai recently welcomed some of the most recognisable names in global sport, hosting the inaugural World Sports Summit, a two-day gathering focused less on competition and more on conversation. The summit brought together athletes and industry leaders from across disciplines including basketball, football, boxing and mixed martial arts. Rather than centring on results or rivalries, discussions explored how sport functions as a powerful social force that shapes communities and individual lives far beyond the field of play. FIFA President Gianni Infantino said the diversity of voices in the room was what made the event stand out, describing it as “a…
Musk fired back on X, writing: “Ryanair CEO is an utter idiot. Fire him.” In a follow-up post, he accused O’Leary of getting Starlink’s fuel-burn impact wrong “by a factor of 10” and added: “Fire this imbecile.” Ryanair’s official X account also joined the fray, mocking Musk during a reported outage on his platform, replying: “perhaps you need Wi-Fi @elonmusk?” Behind the insults lies a substantive dispute about costs and aircraft performance. Ryanair has publicly ruled out installing Starlink across its more than 600 Boeing 737s, arguing the external antennas would increase drag and fuel consumption. O’Leary has said the…

“This is a reconnaissance mission,” he said, stressing there is no permanent deployment or combat posture planned. The move comes as Denmark and a growing group of European allies step up military activity in and around Greenland, expanding exercises and troop presence at Copenhagen’s request. Denmark has said the goal is to strengthen Arctic security and allies’ ability to operate in extreme conditions, with officers and small detachments already arriving from several European countries. But the deployments are unfolding against an unusually volatile political backdrop. U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly raised the prospect of taking control of Greenland, and…
The government of Uzbekistan is implementing “New Tashkent”, under Tashkent’s Master Plan, through 2045. It will be a purpose-built city designed to absorb population growth, ease environmental pressure, and introduce new urban living standards in Central Asia. The project officially began in March 2023, when the foundation stone was laid. Strategically located close to the current capital of the country, between the Chirchik and Korasuv rivers, New Tashkent is planned to cover around 20,000 hectares, positioning it as a potential new urban core rather than a peripheral suburb. According to the plan, the city will accommodate about 2 million people…
