On Monday, 2 February, Israel reopened the Rafah crossing in the southern Gaza Strip at the border with Egypt, in a step forward in the US-brokered ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas. The crossing was supposed to reopen earlier, during the first phase of the ceasefire that began in October 2025. However, Israel postponed it until the return of the body of the last Israeli hostage, which happened last week. How have people in Gaza reacted to this development? What does it mean for the relationship between Israel and Hamas? And how has the European Union (EU) responded? To answer…
US announces $6 million aid to Cuba as President Díaz-Canel accuses it of imposing ‘energy blockade’
The US government announced on Thursday an additional $6 million (€5.1 million) in aid to Cuba as the island’s crisis deepens and tensions between Washington and Havana continue to soar, with Cuba’s President Miguel Díaz-Canel accusing the US of an “energy blockade.” The aid is largely meant for those living in Cuba’s eastern region, battered by Hurricane Melissa late last year. The Washington-provided supplies include rice, beans, pasta, cans of tuna and solar lamps, which will be delivered by the Catholic Church and Caritas. Economic models used by governments, central banks and investors are “increasingly understating” climate change risks as the world continues to heat up. A new report led by the University of Exeter’s Green Futures Solutions team, in partnership with financial think-tank Carbon Tracker, warns that today’s flawed damage models are creating a “false sense of security” for the global economy. It calls for closer collaboration between climate scientists, economists, regulators and investors before temperatures rise to 2°C above pre-industrial levels. This is the threshold scientists believe would trigger several catastrophic tipping points such as mass biodiversity loss and ocean acidification. “Current…

The US and Russia have agreed to re-establish high-level military dialogue for the first time in more than four years in another sign of warming relations between the two countries since US President Donald Trump returned to the Oval Office. High-level military communication was suspended in late 2021 between Washington and Moscow, just months before the Kremlin launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Trump campaigned on bringing the war, nearing its fourth anniversary, to a swift end. Many of his proposals so far have heavily favoured the Kremlin, including requiring Ukraine to cede territory to Russia in…

Can the European Union really decouple from Donald Trump’s America — economically, politically, and strategically? In this episode of EU Confidential, host Sarah Wheaton speaks with Mateusz Morawiecki, former Polish prime minister and president of the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) party about his call for an “Economic NATO,” an even stronger economic and political alliance between the EU, the U.S. and others as counterbalance to China and Russia. His vision goes against a mainstream trend we’re observing across European capitals as they seek to decouple from Trump’s America. To explain what this EU-U.S. divorce looks like in practice, Sarah is…
Rose also responded to Tusk’s later criticism, saying the PM should have sent the message to Czarzasty, a member of the New Left party that is part of the ruling coalition. He denounced the speaker’s “despicable, disrespectful and insulting comments about President Trump. “ The U.S. ambassador added he had “nothing but the greatest respect and admiration” for Tusk, who he called “a model ally and great friend of the United States.” However, in a later response to Polish online criticism, Rose undermined the close military ties with Poland, writing: “Should we take all our soldiers and equipment with us?”…
