EU should stop discussing and move forward with Ukraine reparations loan, Dombrovskis tells Euronews
Published on 26/11/2025 – 9:26 GMT+1 “It is time that we stop discussing different options and move forward”, European Commissioner for Economy and Productivity Valdis Dombrovskis told Euronews’ Europe Today. Dombrovskis spoke with Euronews on Wednesday about how the EU should finance Ukraine’s €135 billion budget hole, as the country faces one of the most challenging moments in its history amid the nearly four-year-long Russian war. The Latvian Commissioner believes that a reparation loan guaranteed by Russian frozen assets in Europe is “what can provide sizable support for Ukraine without putting additional and substantial fiscal burden on the EU or…
Dozens of activists from the feminist collective #NousToutes held a torchlit protest outside the Panthéon in Paris, drawing attention to new figures showing an increase in femicides across France. Demonstrators unfurled a 20-meter banner listing the names of more than 1,180 women killed since 2017 and chanted “Not one more.” Messages criticising the government’s response were projected onto the monument. Protesters demanded clearer legal definitions, more funding and stronger measures to address gender-based violence.
In 2024, 409 ships were scrapped through this official market, though calling it “official” makes it sound clean and safe, which, for the most part, it isn’t. A few of the ships scrapped last year were disassembled in countries like Denmark, Norway and the Netherlands, which follow strict rules regarding human and environmental safety. A handful of others were scrapped in Turkey, which has an OK record. But two-thirds were scrapped in Southeast Asia, where the shipbreaking industry is notoriously unsafe. To get around safely rules, less-than-scrupulous owners often sell their nearly dead ships to “final journey” firms, which have…
Last week’s 28-point peace plan drafted by Russia and the US outlining a proposed end to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine sparked uncertainty, especially among Europeans not involved in the process. One of the main questions at this time is whether Europe can still rely on the rules-based system that has shaped its security for decades, with the United States as its protector, or whether this has opened the door to Russia’s further push to destabilise its immediate neighbourhood and the rest of the continent. At this year’s Berlin Freedom Conference, Euronews spoke with retired Lieutenant General Ben Hodges, former…

Countries including France, Germany, the Netherlands, Lithuania and Luxembourg all pushed the Commission to keep working on proposals to finance Ukraine, according to one official briefed on the discussion. The prospect of a bridge financing model had been raised on Nov. 4 by EU Economy Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis, who noted: “The longer we now run delays,…

On today’s agenda is defining a European solution for peace in Ukraine. Meanwhile, defence is also a hot theme this week.
