Apple is unveiling its latest iPhone model on 9 September, widely expected to be a foldable phone going by the name ‘iPhone Ultra’.

It is the tech giant’s first foray into the foldable phone market, with the new model equipped with two screens: an internal 19.8-centimetre screen that can be opened like a book and a 13.5-centimetre display on the outside for more typical smartphone usage.

The device will also have four cameras — two on the back, one on the inside and one front selfie camera.

The iPhone Ultra is also expected to include Apple’s latest processor, the A20 Pro, which is expected to be 18% faster and use 30% less energy than the previous iteration, the A19 Pro, and to be rolled out in the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro and Prox Max high-end models.

It is also rumoured that the iPhone Ultra will have asymmetrical corners, after images of screen protectors leaked earlier this year showing right-angle corners on the left and curved corners on the right.

Samsung currently dominates the foldable phone market, while competitors Huawei, Google and Motorola, among others, offer a number of alternatives.

Analysts expect Apple will dominate the market as soon as it enters with the iPhone Ultra by the end of the year and is well-placed to do so thanks to its long history of offering multi-window and large-screen software through the iPad and other devices.

Market intelligence firm International Data Corporation (IDC) predicts Apple will sell more than 10 million units in its first year, with each mode going for between €2,200 and €2,500 for the base model and from €2,600 to €3,000 for models with more storage.

The event is also a major milestone for the company, as it will be the first public introduction of incoming CEO John Ternus, who will host the presentation.

The former senior vice president of hardware engineering officially takes the reins from outgoing CEO Tim Cook on 1 September.

Also expected to be unveiled at the event are the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra, the iPad mini 8, AirPods Pro, as well as updates to Apple TV and HomePod mini.
