Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska traveled to Ceuta on Thursday to inspect border infrastructure and a new sea barrier designed to keep people from swimming into the city. The exclave’s security personnel has also been reinforced with an additional 300 police officers and 2,000 soldiers.
“We do this to dissuade anyone who aspires to enter Ceuta and Melilla irregularly,” said Grande-Marlaska. “None of them will remain in Ceuta, none of them will make it to the Iberian Peninsula, none of them will be given legal status.”
The rumored mass crossing has been cited by critics of Spain’s migration policies.
Austria’s conservative Europe, Integration and Family Minister Claudia Bauer, last week mentioned the rumored Aug. 15 surge in a written statement, demanding Madrid “immediately and significantly reinforce border protection in its African enclaves and ensure that this time it will hold.”
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government also cited the possibility of a mid-August mass arrival last week while justifying its decision to maintain border checks on travelers from Spain.
