The EU’s foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has said the US remains Europe’s biggest ally despite criticism of the bloc’s current trajectory.

In an interview with Euronews at the Doha Forum in Qatar, she encouraged the globe to focus on unity, and insisted the two continents should “stick together.”

“Let’s focus on the things that we can do together. I mean, what we can take from that security strategy is that we are still allies with America. We don’t always see eye to eye on everything,” she said.

“Let’s focus on the global challenges that we actually have, which are, you know, economic coercive practices from China that we are both faced with, which is the threat that comes from malign actors like Russia, like China, like Iran,” Kallas added.

On Friday, the US released a new National Security Strategy for the United States in which it describes Europe as a continent in decline, warns that European nations are facing “civilisational erasure” because of migration and proposes to “cultivate resistance to Europe’s current trajectory within European nations”.

US officials are currently holding talks with Ukrainian counterparts to end the war with Russia.

Speaking about the EU-Qatar launch negotiations, Kallas said: “We see Qatar’s growing role in the Middle East as well. I mean, all the international mediation that they’re doing when it comes to Sudan, but also, Gaza and Ukrainian children, for example, or the Great Lakes.”

“We see that we have a lot of things where we can work together. Of course, not only on peace and security matters, but also other matters like trade, economic relations, innovation, technology that we can build up,” she added.
