In Belgium, Hadja Lahbib proved herself capable by managing the country’s presidency of the Council of the European Union.
Now, the former TV anchor-turned-politician will have to convince MEPs she’s got what it takes to handle a European commissioner portfolio for preparedness, crisis management and equality.
Former Foreign Minister Lahbib beat rival Didier Reynders to win the nomination for her country. Belgium opted to send a woman this time, responding to Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s pleas for greater gender balance.
