Actor Patrick Stewart has died at the age of 86.

Stewart died in Los Angeles on Wednesday following “a brief and poignant journey” with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia, according to spokesperson Kelly Bush Novak.

Best known for portraying Professor Charles Xavier in the “X-Men” films and Captain Jean-Luc Picard in the “Star Trek: The Next Generation” series and films, Stewart spent much of his career on stage.

His theatrical roles ranged from Claudius to Macbeth. He also frequently performed a one-man adaptation of “A Christmas Carol” and appeared alongside his longtime friend Ian McKellen in West End and Broadway productions of Harold Pinter’s “No Man’s Land” and Samuel Beckett’s “Waiting for Godot”.
