North Korea said on Saturday that it had tested a new AI-powered torpedo system as it continues a wave of recent weapons demonstrations.

The country’s KCNA state news agency reported that the test involved the “super-speed, precisely guided” Zam-2.0 torpedo system, which it said uses artificial intelligence to aid with target detection and guidance.

The report said the test had verified the weapon’s propulsion systems.

It comes after North Korea also tested two types of underwater-launched strategic cruise missiles on Wednesday as part of what is believed to be a push to bolster its naval capabilities. The missiles are thought to have been fired from a submarine.

North Korea has also carried out a number of ballistic missile tests in recent weeks as it seeks to build up its arsenal amid growing tensions with neighbouring South Korea.

In August, US President Donald Trump told reporters that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un had “57 very powerful nuclear weapons” as he once again touted the pair’s relationship.

“You know what, the fact that I get along with him, that’s a good thing not a bad thing,” Trump said, adding that Pyongyang’s nuclear arsenal should “never” have been allowed to happen.

Trump said at the time that he intended to meet with Kim later this year, although he gave no further details on the plan.

The president also claimed earlier this month that he was preventing a war between North and South Korea “on a constant basis.”
