France’s chief of defense staff, Gen. Fabien Mandon, told lawmakers Thursday that Germany had pulled out of the project. His comments landed especially awkwardly as German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier is currently on a state visit to France.

Later in the evening, Mandon tried to backpedal in a written statement, arguing the project was only delayed to the late 2040s.

In recent years, Franco-German defense industrial projects have repeatedly failed. MGCS — which involves KNDS France, KNDS Germany, Rheinmetall and Thales — has been bogged down by years of delays, industrial disputes and political tensions. POLITICO reported in June that France and Germany would most likely build separate tanks.

Now, Pistorius has said the two countries will still work together on “unmanned systems and automated processing.”

The German minister pledged that the project wouldn’t meet the same fate as the Future Combat Air System, the joint next-generation fighter jet program that collapsed before the summer. “The crucial point is that we learn from our mistakes. That is why MGCS is in no way at risk and remains an important future project for our two nations and our two armed forces,” he said.

But the imbroglio highlights strains in the defense relationship between Paris and Berlin, and an increasing number of French lawmakers are now calling for Paris to look for other partners.

“Defense cooperation with Germany is at an all-time low, since Germany is going it alone,” a French lawmaker working on defense policy told POLITICO on condition of anonymity.

Rixa Fürsen contributed to this article from Bordeaux, France.
