Living above a discount supermarket on the otherwise exclusive North Sea island beloved of high earners: how this new Lidl is set to completely transform the world-famous luxury holiday destination of Sylt, with its dunes and thatched-roof houses.
On Sylt, the traditional shopping experience is being completely reimagined. On a 16,000-square-metre site, Lidl is combining a state-of-the-art store on the ground floor with 15 new flats directly above. The homes, between 44 and 78 square metres in size, are explicitly designed for permanent residence. For the island this is a genuine breakthrough, intended above all to provide commuters with affordable housing close to their workplace. Mayor Tina Haltermann is full of praise, describing it as a pioneering step that shows how modern retail and residential space can be combined while using as little land as possible.
The old building becomes a new XXL hub for everyday needs
Anyone who assumes that the old structure has simply been torn down to make way for the new build is wrong. The existing Lidl building is being retained and recycled. It will be merged with the new complex to create a vibrant local services centre. The plans are already on the table: a pharmacy, a health and beauty store and regional businesses will move into the existing areas. This will establish a new, central point of contact for the people of Sylt and their visitors.
Eco milestone: a supermarket made entirely of wood
Lidl is using a resource-efficient hybrid timber construction method, partial greening of the façade and roof, and radical material recycling. Outside, processed concrete is reused as paving; inside, secondary plastics and recycled glass and aluminium are employed.
In energy terms, the complex is designed to be completely self-sufficient. A large photovoltaic installation on the roof provides green electricity, while waste heat from product refrigeration is captured via cutting-edge ventilation systems and heat pumps to heat and cool the building.
XXL shopping comfort and high-speed charging stations
For customers, the new development means an upgrade in every respect. The 1,600-square-metre sales floor offers extra-wide aisles and a completely new style of product presentation. With 184 parking spaces, shopping remains as relaxed as possible. A particular highlight for electric car owners: three ultra-modern charging columns with six charging points are being installed on site, delivering ultra-fast DC power between 60 and 180 kilowatts to charge vehicles.
