A member of the UK armed forces died in Ukraine on Saturday, the British Ministry of Defence has announced.

The unnamed service member died as the result of a “road traffic incident,” the ministry said in a statement posted to social media.

“The family have been informed and have requested a period of grace before further details are released,” it reads. “Our thoughts and sympathies are with the individual’s loved ones at this difficult time”.

Writing on X, British Defence Secretary Wes Streeting added: “This is very sad news for the family and for those grieving with them in our Armed Forces. My deepest condolences go to them all.”

Few details are available on the UK’s military presence in Ukraine, although Westminster has previously confirmed that British personnel are present in the country. These personnel support the security of the UK Defence Section in Ukraine and offer medical training and mentoring to Ukraine’s Medical Forces.

British forces have also provided training to their Ukrainian counterparts in the UK.

In December, the British government announced the death of Lance Corporal George Hooley in Ukraine.

Hooley, 28, is said to have died on 9 December following a “tragic accident whilst observing Ukrainian forces test a new defensive capability, away from the front lines.”

This is a developing story. Check back here for further details.
